Harambe! (6mos to 6-years old) Starts: 10:00 am Description: In Swahili, Harambe means “All pull together.” At BloomBars, Harambe is the practice of hope, possibility and compassion – basically, all the things that happen when we all come together. Think of it as your little one’s first opportunity to express his or her voice (into a microphone), dance, play a drum or percussion instrument, shout, or sing-along to songs that build character, confidence and community.
With more than 10 years of experience in youth development, education and conflict resolution, program instructor Baba Ras D’s “Harambe” is a morning jolt of inspiration for parents, caregivers and children.
Parental consent required. Participation is a $7-10 donation per session or $100 for 12 sessions.

The Garden Open Mic feat. G Yamazawa (guest co-host: Bomani Armah) Starts: 8:30 pm Description: We welcome poetry, music, comedy, story-telling, dancing, juggling, political rants, relationship tirades and other special talents as long as they are within the realm of human respect and dignity. BloomBars is an all all-ages, community-oriented art space, so please keep this in mind when deciding what to perform.
Sign-up list opens at 8:30 pm and the first performer goes on at 9:00 pm!

As he so aptly puts it “I’m not a rapper, I’m a poet with a hip-hop style”. BOMANI’s internet smash hit “Read a Book” is the subject of a short animated film that debuted on BET in June 2007 to much critical acclaim and controversial backlash. He is featured on the first single/video from Mello-D & The Rados: “Cool Witchu”, which aired on BET’s “Rap City” and peaked at #3 on national college radio charts. Bomani’s music video for “The Hustle” aired at the San Francisco Black Film Festival in 2006 to rave reviews. Bomani’s 2008 release Radio Friendly blends his fluid and funky production style with his insight-fully poetic yet accessible lyrics. As a editorial writer he has been published in the Washington Post and TheRoot.com. Bomani produces and engineers for other artists and has scored numerous movies and television shows. Mr. Armah has worked as a consultant teaching creative writing, music and video production for American University, The Washington National Cathedral, The University of the District of Columbia, The National Youth Leadership Council, The National Organization of Concerned Black Men, The American Poetry Museum, Martha’s Table, and Words Beats & Life Inc. In 2012 Bomani is releasing his first book and accompanying album entitled "Circumlocution Vol II". He will also continue being the drummer and front man for his #funk#rock#gogo#hiphop band Immaletchufinish.

Born in Durham, NC and raised in a Buddhist household, G is a two-time Southern Fried Champ, NPS finalist, IWPS finalist, and has taken his art to historic venues across the nation including the Sundance Film Festival, Bonnaroo Music
Festival, and Nuyorican Poets Cafe. His favorite food is fried chicken, and he hates sushi.

Bigger than the Beatles - Obama and the Peeps (2010, 82 min), by Charles Krezell - takes us back to the exciting days of the Obama Inauguration, as seen through the eyes of everyday people in Washington, DC.
Filmed the week of Barack Obama's inauguration on January 20, 2009, "Bigger than the Beatles" follows DC's own Dunbar High School Marching Band and students from the Horizons alternative school in suburban Atlanta, as they prepare for the inauguration. Bigger than the Beatles captures the strong feelings in 2009--energy, enthusiasm and the idea of something new emerging in our country. Three years later, it allows us to reflect on our current realities and urges us to consider -- what is necessary for real change?
Our screening will be followed by a Q&A discussion with director Charles Krezell, producer David Minckler and TV producer / former WPFW radio host, Konyka Dunson.

BloomScreen Indie Film Night – is a weekly series of independent and foreign films, accompanied by discussions with filmmakers and other experts. Our goal is to provide a unique experience that a local Cineplex cannot – an opportunity for discussion that allows a better understanding of issues affecting our communities and our world.

Our vision for this program is to make BloomBars a place where everyone can have a chance to create, watch, and participate in art through the theatre medium. The adventure of creating this program makes me extremely excited for the potential this new arm of BloomBars brings.
I look forward to what this program will grow into, and anxiously await who will come our way to participate in or volunteer to help the BloomBars theatre program grow into the future.
