Liv for Bloom: A Message from Omrao Brown of LIV & Bohemian Caverns

Wednesday, December 1st at 7:00 pm at liv

Dear Friends of BloomBars,

bohemian-cavernsI grew up in Massachusetts with a father who is both an accomplished musician and music educator. Of course, that meant I grew up playing an instrument, but the lasting effect of that experience was my passion for being an advocate of music and the arts.

I never could have imagined that passion would lead me to resurrecting a landmark institution in Bohemian Caverns. Founded in 1926, our space was home to Duke Ellington’s music before he made his way to New York, was a favorite of Cab Calloway, and jazz legends Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Sonny Rollins all made regular appearances at the club.

With that kind of history, we knew it was important to create an environment that added to the health of every aspect of the music – its existence, its development from the standpoint of musicians and fans, its health in terms of a musician being able to make a living as an artist, and fans’ ability to experience the music.

When BloomBars first started hosting events three years ago, I knew we were kindred spirits. With a simple mantra, “You Bloom. We Bloom.” they have invited us to explore our creative boundaries to realize our full potential, and the potential of a healthy and compassionate community centered around the arts. That is to say, an investment in their growth is an investment in your growth and mine.

That’s why I’m hosting the “Liv for Bloom” Benefit Concert and Live Painting on Wednesday, December 1st. We’re going to have an incredible line-up of special guest artists and musicians who want to show their love for BloomBars and wish to see its continued growth.

Omrao-BrownWhen times are tough, it’s easy to miss the “We” and only see the “Me,” but if we are to have a vibrant community united around the arts, it will be up to all of us to nurture the seeds that have been planted.

Let’s keep BloomBars alive in our hearts, and in its home in Columbia Heights.

Until soon, keep blooming!
