Each week, students will take on a new topic (environment, civil rights, peace, health, disease, conflict resolution), and then explore that issue through music, dance, visual arts, film and theater. Artist in Bloom resident and renowned vocalist Tamika Love Jones will lead the sessions along with guest speakers and artists. Parental consent required for youth under 18. Participation is a $10 donation per session or $100 for 12 sessions.

Samba Classes are Back! Many of you may remember “Levantamos and BloomBars present: A Celebration of Afro-Brazilian Culture” back in November. Zezeh gave a class no first-time Samba dancer will ever forget. What a workout!!!
Now, classes are back every Thursday evening - plus Samba night on Friday nights for you to practice your new skills!
Zezeh Zax is a Washington, DC based dancer, teacher, and professional performer of Brazilian samba and founder of the ZEZEH BRAZIL Dance Troupe. Originally from Sao Paulo, Brazil, Zezeh Zax is a former Carnival Queen of the Unidos do Peruche samba school. She has danced professionally for over 15 years Back By Popular Demand! Salvador Dawning (2011, 54 min), by Kamau Hunter – examines the Movimento Negro (Black Movement), for equal rights, in Bahia state, Northeastern Brazil.
Salvador Dawning captures the diverse perspectives of Afro-Brazilian mobilization from Brazil’s own Afro-descendant leaders, legislators, and activists while at the same time giving a glimpse of the struggles Afro-Brazilians face. Afro-Brazilians number about 70 million, approximately 47% of Brazil’s total population and comprising the largest group of Afro-descendant people outside of Africa! Yet despite Afro-Brazilian’s tremendous contributions to Brazil’s culture, society and economy, they face disproportionate social and economic barriers.
Through policy, cultural enrichment, workforce and community development, today’s Afro-Brazilian leaders are shifting the pendulum and dramatically bolstering the rights, access, and quality of life of Afro-Brazilian. Their struggles and victories provide invaluable lessons for us all. (Portuguese w/ English subtitles).
After our screening, we will have a discussion with a panel of experts, led by the film's Executive Producer – Dr. Keith Hunter.

He’s also the same dynamo who organizes the Mount Pleasant Children's Puppet Hour. SS&P starts on Friday, January 20th. Stay around afterwards for some time to socialize with other parents and kids! The show will start with BOAT BURNING's "Music for Amplified Guitars, Cello and Tape", followed by THE COLUMBIA PLAYERS' performance of movements from Beethoven (Op. 132) and Debussy string quartets.
Live It Learn It boosts academic achievement and motivation for students in high-poverty DC public schools by supplementing conventional classroom instruction with rigorous, academically focused trips to DC's world-class resources.
THE COLUMBIA PLAYERS, a DC-based classical string quartet playing everything from Beethoven to Jimi Hendrix, includes Mark Kapeluck (violin), Sara Boyce (violin), Jennifer Murray (viola) and David Rabin (cello).
