Joana Vasconcelos – Coração Independente (Independent Heart)(2008, 52 min), by Joana Cunha Ferreira – profiles Joana Vasconcelos – a young artist receiving increasing recognition.
Her extremely inventive pieces are huge, funny, ironic, experimental, provocative, Portuguese, extremely simple and super elaborate. This documentary is about the way life and work mix until they become the same and how her pieces are born from this medley, like one of her most iconic pieces, “Dorothy,” a giant shoe built from hundreds of pots and pans (presented at the Venice Biennale in 2007) or the outsized chandelier made with cotton tampons instead of crystal pendants (presented at the Venice Biennale 2005).
The director Joana Cunha Ferreira followed the artist for almost a year, looking at her work in the studio and following the working process of the artist and her team. The result is a portrait of an artist of extraordinary strength & talent. (Portuguese with English subtitles).
Our film will be followed by a Q&A discussion.
