BloomScreen Presents: BloomShorts ~ An Evening of Short Films, featuring “Hopes and Schemes,” “My View + You?”, “A Cup of Coffee,” “Shaw Speaks,” and “Ichiban Reggae Japan.”  The films will explore topics such as gentrification, personal perceptions and ambitions, and Japan’s Reggae movement.

Our screening will be followed with a discussion with the local filmmakers Najma Nuriddin, Lawrence Green, Mark Shelton, Roan Ross and Avery “Byword” Smith – moderated by host, Risen Spivey of Bowie, Maryland’s public access channel.

About the Films:

  • Lawrence Green – “My View + You?” – a film about how our lives are shaped by our beliefs and experiences.  (6:30 min)
  • Najma Nuriddin – “Shaw Speaks,” focuses on a neighborhood in Washington D.C. that has and is experiencing gentrification. This documentary takes a close look at Shaw, interviewing new and native residents, compiling together the many changes Shaw has endured.  (14 min)
  • Mark Shelton – “A Cup of Coffee,” a short film that plays with time and judgment.  (5:42 min)
  • Avery “Byword” Smith – “Hopes and Schemes” is a hilarious comedy about a bunch of misfits trying to amass great wealth through network marketing. Think Oceans Eleven meets Office Space. Think Seinfeld meets Superfly.  (17:28 min)
  • Roan Ross – “Ichiban Reggae Japan,” is an inside look at underground Reggae in Japan – a movement that started out with just a few passionate fans in a small club, has grown to thousands of enthusiastic fans throughout Japan.  (16 min)
