Homeland: Four Portraits of Native Action (2005, 88 min), directed by Roberta Grossman.
Nearly all Indian lands in the U.S. face grave environmental threats, but a handful of activists are fighting back. In February, we showed the first two stories of Homeland, focusing on the Northern Cheyenne in Montana fighting coal bed methane development and the Gwich’in in Alaska fighting oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
For our March screening, we will show the story of Mitchell & Rita Capitan of the Eastern Navajo in New Mexico, who are fighting uranium mining. We will also show the story of Barry Dana of the Penobscot of Maine, who is fighting a paper mill dumping dioxin, a carcinogen into the Penobscot River.
Homeland: Four Portraits of Native Action profiles the against-all-odds struggles of Native American leaders who are taking on powerful energy companies and government agencies to protect the environment for all Americans.
After the screening, we will be led in our discussion by climate activists Nils and Yiming of the DC Citizens Climate Lobby and Melissa Bisagni of the National Museum of the American Indian.
