Learn to Samba at BloomBars!

Many of you may remember BloomBars’ event, “Levantamos and BloomBars present: A Celebration of Afro-Brazilian Culture.” Zezeh gave a class no first-time Samba dancer will ever forget. What a workout!

Don’t be that guy/girl standing up against the wall watching everyone. Just think, by next carnival you’ll be ready for every party in the city, if you don’t choose to go to Brazil to experience the real thing.

About the Instructor, Zezeh Zax:

Zezeh Zax is a Washington, DC based dancer, teacher, and professional performer of Brazilian samba and founder of the ZEZEH BRAZIL Dance Troupe.

Originally from Sao Paulo, Brazil, Zezeh Zax is a former Carnival Queen of the Unidos do Peruche samba school. She has danced professionally for over 15 years in a number of countries, appearing on Brazilian television shows and performing in a variety of venues in the United States.

Harambe! (6mos to 6-years old)
Starts: 10:00 am
Description: HARAMBE (6mos to 6-years old)
Mondays – 10:00am to 10:30am (Starts Monday, January 30th)
In Swahili, Harambe means “All pull together.” At BloomU, Harambe is the practice of hope, possibility and compassion – basically, all the things that happen when we all come together. Think of it as your little one’s first opportunity to express his or her voice (into a microphone), dance, play a drum or percussion instrument, shout, or sing-along to songs that build character, confidence and community. With more than 10 years of experience in youth development, education and conflict resolution, program instructor Baba Ras D’s “Harambe” is a Monday morning jolt of inspiration for parents, caregivers and children. Parental consent required. Participation is a $7-10 donation per session or $100 for 12 sessions.

A constant figure on the Washington, D.C. area's music scene, RENE MOFFATT has worked tirelessly on honing his performing and song writing skills. With a knack for memorable melodies and insightful lyrics, this up-and-coming songster is quickly making a name for himself as a respected songwriter in the nation's capital. The April 2011 release of his debut EP “Here And Now Is Home” marked the beginning of a new chapter in René's life. Leaving behind the relative comfort of the nine-to-five René has transformed himself writing songs, performing them, and connecting with his audience in new ways.

BloomScreen presents: Homeland: Four Portraits of Native Action

Homeland: Four Portraits of Native Action (2005, 88 min), directed by Roberta Grossman.

Nearly all Indian lands in the U.S. face grave environmental threats – toxic waste, strip mining, oil drilling and nuclear contamination. But a handful of activists are fighting back. Filmed against some of America’s most spectacular backdrops, from Alaska to Maine and Montana to New Mexico, Homeland: Four Portraits of Native Action profiles the against-all-odds struggles of Native American leaders who are taking on powerful energy companies and government agencies to protect the environment for all Americans. A moving tribute to the power of grassroots organizing, Homeland is also a call-to-action against the current dismantling of thirty years of environmental laws.

After the screening, we will be led in our discussion by climate activists Nils and Yiming of the DC Citizens Climate Lobby and Melissa Bisagni of the National Museum of the American Indian.

Our goal is to provide a unique experience that a local Cineplex cannot – an opportunity for discussion that allows a better understanding of issues affecting our communities and our world.
