Samba Classes at BloomBars Every Thursday at 6:30 -8:30pm.

Samba Classes are Back! Many of you may remember “Levantamos and BloomBars present: A Celebration of Afro-Brazilian Culture” back in November. Zezeh gave a class no first-time Samba dancer will ever forget. What a workout!!! Don’t be that guy/girl standing up against the wall watching everyone do the dance you with you could do. Just think, by next year you’ll be ready for every carnival party in the city, if you don’t chose to go to Brazil to experience the real thing.

Zezeh Zax is a Washington, DC based dancer, teacher, and professional performer of Brazilian samba and founder of the ZEZEH BRAZIL Dance Troupe. Originally from Sao Paulo, Brazil, Zezeh Zax is a former Carnival Queen of the Unidos do Peruche samba school. She has danced professionally for over 15 years in a number of countries, appearing on Brazilian television shows and performing in a variety of venues in the United States.

Heart to Art (Ages 7 to 12)
Starts: 4:00 pm
Description: Heart to Art is a superhero school for young girls who want to use art to change the world. Each week, students will take on a new topic (environment, civil rights, peace, health, disease, conflict resolution), and then explore that issue through music, dance, visual arts, film and theater. Artist in Bloom resident and renowned vocalist Tamika Love Jones will lead the sessions along with guest speakers and artists. Parental consent required for youth under 18. Participation is a $10 donation per session or $100 for 12 sessions.

Description: Learn to Samba at BloomBars! Join expert sambista and renowned instructor Zezeh Zax for samba lessons, every Thursday night at 6:30 - 8:00 pm. Suggested donation $10.

SONGS, STORIES AND PUPPETS (Ages 5 and under)
Starts: 10:00 am
Description: A variety show for the under 5 crowd, “Songs, Stories & Puppets” is the trifecta that could help form your baby’s first sentence, “Is it Friday?” David Greenfieldboyce is a puppeteer, former teacher, stay-at-home dad for his 18-month-old son and Mount Pleasant resident. He’s also the same dynamo who organizes the Mount Pleasant Children's Puppet Hour. SS&P starts on Friday, January 20th. Stay around afterwards for some time to socialize with other parents and kids! Suggested donation: $5.

Kids Capoeira (Bilingual/Bilingue; Age 8 to 18)
Starts: 9:00 am
Description: Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art disguised as a dance and performed to music. It is comprised of specific offensive and defensive movements and, in contrast to other martial arts, the participant is constantly in motion. In addition to movement, students learn to play the traditional music of Capoeira.

Contra Mestre Bomba has been teaching the art of Capoeira for more than 20 years. Beginners should wear loose fitting clothing and light footwear. Instructor Bomba speaks limited English but students can easily follow by example, and Spanish speakers will be able to practice speaking and communicating; learning capoeira readily.

$10 donation per student.

HARAMBE! (6mos to 6-years old)
Starts: 10:00 am
Description: In Swahili, Harambe means “All pull together.” At BloomBars, Harambe is the practice of hope, possibility and compassion – basically, all the things that happen when we all come together. Think of it as your little one’s first opportunity to express his or her voice (into a microphone), dance, play a drum or percussion instrument, shout, or sing-along to songs that build character, confidence and community.
With more than 10 years of experience in youth development, education and conflict resolution, program instructor Baba Ras D’s “Harambe” is a morning jolt of inspiration for parents, caregivers and children.

Parental consent required. Participation is a $7-10 donation per session or $100 for 12 sessions.
