Starts: 8:00 am
Description: Given that the body is an essential vessel for all daily life, would you say you move with rhythm and grace? In Contemporary Physical Training we will explore the relationship between movement and music with an emphasis on the body’s alignment, rhythm, stretching and muscle relaxation. Combining contemporary dance and various modern techniques as well as yoga and pilates, professional dancer and actor José Manuel Ozuna-Báez believes that by incorporating different ways of thinking about the body and our relationship with it we are also preparing and opening our minds to a new way of expression through movements. Participation is a $15 donation per session or $150 for 12 sessions. Yoga mats required and light weights (1 to 5 Ibs) recommended.
CAPOEIRA (Ages 8 to 18)
Starts: 9:00 am
Description: Saturdays -- 9 - 10 am - Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art disguised as a dance and performed to musical instruments and traditional Brazilian songs. It is comprised of specific offensive and defensive movements and, in contrast to other martial arts, the participant is constantly in motion. In addition to movement, students, or capoeiristas, learn to play the traditional instruments used during Capoeira. Contra Mestre Bomba has been teaching the art of Capoeira for more than 20 years. Beginners should wear loose fitting clothing and light footwear. Instructor Bomba only speaks Portuguese and communicates by example, intuition and a ginormous heart, so consider language immersion an added bonus.

Description: HARAMBE (6mos to 6-years old)
Mondays – 10:00am to 10:30am (Starts Monday, January 30th)
In Swahili, Harambe means “All pull together.” At BloomU, Harambe is the practice of hope, possibility and compassion – basically, all the things that happen when we all come together. Think of it as your little one’s first opportunity to express his or her voice (into a microphone), dance, play a drum or percussion instrument, shout, or sing-along to songs that build character, confidence and community. With more than 10 years of experience in youth development, education and conflict resolution, program instructor Baba Ras D’s “Harambe” is a Monday morning jolt of inspiration for parents, caregivers and children. Parental consent required. Participation is a $7-10 donation per session or $100 for 12 sessions.Canceled this week: Bachata class (back 2/25)

About the Instructor: With a passion for organic dance, Margaret Beardsworth has found a home within the D.C. Latin dance community as dancer, performer and instructor.
Margaret's love affair with bachata began as an undergraduate student in Miami, FL, but it was her experience working and volunteering in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic that exposed her to traditional bachata. Since living in the Dominican Republic, Margaret has continued to dance bachata socially, experimenting with different styles and moves. Margaret also performs and teaches with DC Casineros, the area's premier Rueda de Casino (Cuban) dance troupe. She brings her experience in Latin dance as well as a cultural and historical perspective to each of her classes.

BloomBars Presents Smokey Stevens' "I Just Want To Tell Somebody" (2 Shows)
Starts: 7:00 pm
Description: BloomBars is proud to present "I Just Want To Tell Somebody," the life story of Ronald Smokey Stevens -- a one man show conceived, directed and performed by Ronald Smokey Stevens. 7:00pm and 9:00pm Performances.
"I Just Want To Tell Somebody," is the story of actor, singer dancer, Ronald Smokey Stevens’ rise from humble beginnings growing up in the Trinidad neighborhood of Washington DC, to performing on Broadway, national television, the international stages of Europe, and in a major motion picture. It is a tumultuous odyssey detailing those triumphs as well as the pitfalls and it is a revealing and sometimes startling picture of the layers of Mr. Stevens life, and soul, over a period of 40 yrs.
Stevens, recipient of The NAACP 11th Annual Theater Arts Award, has appeared in several Broadway productions as an actor and dancer, including "Dream Girls," Bubbling Brown Sugar," and “Rollin on the T.O.B.A,” a tribute to the last days of Black Vaudeville, which he co-conceived-wrote-directed-choreographed-and stared in. His film credits include “The Wiz”, “The Cotton Club”, and “Times Square." He has performed with many greats including legendary tap master Charles Honi Coles, Michael Jackson, Lucille Ball, Cab Calloway, Ossie Davis, and Ruby Dee, but the list goes on.
A Washington, D.C. native, Stevens began his professional training and career at The D.C. Black Repertory Co where he studied and performed for six years. He is the author of his first published book entitled, I Just Want To Tell Somebody, The Autobiography of Ronald Smokey Stevens, which he turned into a one-man stage production of the same title and performed it at The Woolly Mammoth Theater in February of 2011 before bringing it to BloomBars.
