Saturday, April 23rd from 9 am until 5 pm
As an artist working in mixed media and sculpture for the past 6 years, my work references the teachings, symbols, and cosmologies of pre-conversion cultures and spiritual beliefs. One of the most important is the notion of a guardian. Many that believe it everything and all sentient beings have a guardian. Places with palpable energy and presence have guardians. A beloved tree often assumes the role of guardian around a building or along a street, and especially in homes.
During my first visit to BloomBars, I was struck by the work, the people, and, that great intangible: the energy and vibe of the place and the people.
This Saturday, the installation I will make (with your help!) is intended to become a guardian of the people, work, and energy of BloomBars.
If desired and so infused, it can watch over, tend to, nurture, protect, guide, soothe and heal. The guardian can carry a story of thing held dear by the community, and become a container for this energy.
I will be bringing waters collected from rivers and streams; earth from sacred and special spots, and found objects.
Participants in BloomBars’ Earth Day art installation are asked to keep an eye out for, and bring:
- Pieces of oxidized iron, bottle caps and nails no larger than 3 x3”∙
- Small liquor bottles–preferably glass, not plastic∙
- Colored ribbon or fabric–preferably red, white, blue, green, yellow and black∙
- Jute twine∙
- Small, straight and crescent-shaped twigs
We will need people who:
- Are handy with a Dremmel∙
- Can do calligraphy or print beautifully
- Will work to stabilize the piece in the northwest corner of the patio
- Can bring positive energy that moves the work along.
If you can help out, or just want to watch a guardian be created from nothing, meet at BloomBars starting at 9 am. You’ll be able to drop in all day, until 5 pm, to lend a hand or donate your found objects.
I can’t wait to help you create BloomBars guardian!
