Artist Statement

My name is Carrie Nobles and I’d like to invite you to the opening of my exhibition,  Eternity Series, on Saturday, October 6, from 6 to 8 pm. The Artist Talk is Sunday, October 7 from 4 to 6 pm.

My work consists of figurative abstract and non objective paintings, installations and digital photography. The images confront beauty, femininity and spirituality, evoking questions about the effects of body image on the formation of identity for women and girls.

Recently I’ve developed a love for digital printmaking through the use of staged photography. My current digital series is titled “Eternity” which documents the transformation of a young girl playing dress-up, pretending and indulging in material things. This series draws on my own memories of how I used to play in my mother’s clothes, imitating her and those iconic images of beautiful women I would see in fairytale books and other media.

I am inspired by childhood memories and everyday experiences as a woman and consider the camera to be just like my paint brush, just another tool to help express my thoughts and questions on life.

I was born and raised from the small town of Randleman, NC and attended North Carolina Central University where I received a BA. I received my MA from Howard University. Currently, I teach art in a K-8 arts based charter school in NC.
