Harambe! (6mos to 6-years old) Starts: 10:00 am Description: HARAMBE (6mos to 6-years old)
Mondays – 10:00am to 10:30am (Starts Monday, January 30th)
In Swahili, Harambe means “All pull together.” At BloomU, Harambe is the practice of hope, possibility and compassion – basically, all the things that happen when we all come together. Think of it as your little one’s first opportunity to express his or her voice (into a microphone), dance, play a drum or percussion instrument, shout, or sing-along to songs that build character, confidence and community. With more than 10 years of experience in youth development, education and conflict resolution, program instructor Baba Ras D’s “Harambe” is a Monday morning jolt of inspiration for parents, caregivers and children. Parental consent required. Participation is a $7-10 donation per session or $100 for 12 sessions. Belly Dance Class Starts: 6:30 pm Description: No experience necessary

A constant figure on the Washington, D.C. area's music scene, RENE MOFFATT has worked tirelessly on honing his performing and song writing skills. With a knack for memorable melodies and insightful lyrics, this up-and-coming songster is quickly making a name for himself as a respected songwriter in the nation's capital. Homeland: Four Portraits of Native Action (2005, 88 min), directed by Roberta Grossman.
Nearly all Indian lands in the U.S. face grave environmental threats – toxic waste, strip mining, oil drilling and nuclear contamination. But a handful of activists are fighting back. Filmed against some of America’s most spectacular backdrops, from Alaska to Maine and Montana to New Mexico, Homeland: Four Portraits of Native Action profiles the against-all-odds struggles of Native American leaders who are taking on powerful energy companies and government agencies to protect the environment for all Americans. A moving tribute to the power of grassroots organizing, Homeland is also a call-to-action against the current dismantling of thirty years of environmental laws.
After the screening, we will be led in our discussion by climate activists Nils and Yiming of the DC Citizens Climate Lobby and Melissa Bisagni of the National Museum of the American Indian.
